Emotional Proximity Vs. Emotional Intimacy
Emotional Proximity:
-Physical presence of a person but they are emotionally distant -Will call and text and are physically present on a surface level.
-Emotionally proximate people can default to deflecting emotional vulnerability, dismissal of emotions, and or avoiding conflict.
-Avoiding conflict can be a form avoiding emotional intimacy.
-Can induce anxiety in the other person because the emotions are not seen or heard and emotional needs are not being met.
Emotional Intimacy: -Vulnerability met with curiosity, interest, or empathy and compassion.
-Building connection through awareness of the other person.
-Asking questions about what will help the situation.
-Deepening connection through acknowledgement of the underlying causes of a situation.
-Taking accountability or sharing burdens communicating a wide range of subjects and struggles including but not limited to shame, overwhelm, and conflicts within the relationship.
This is a subject I hope to dive into deeper as I learn more and grow into a deeper understanding of how this shows up in our lives and what it means to be in an emotionally intimate or proximate relationship. I hope you enjoyed the subject! Leave me a comment below and share your thoughts. I would love to hear from you!
